This guide will walk you through general best practices to ensure a smooth testing experience, followed by specific details on each test type: Skills Tests, Video Tests, and Homework Assignments. For FAQ, scroll to the bottom of the page.
General Guidelines for the Best Candidate Experience
To ensure you have the best possible experience when taking a test through Toggl Hire, we recommend following these guidelines:
Use a Desktop or Laptop: While tests work on mobile devices, we recommend using a computer for the best experience.
Check Your Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is essential to prevent disruptions, especially for video tests.
Disable Ad Blockers and Privacy Extensions: Some browser extensions may interfere with the test platform. We recommend disabling them while taking your test.
Use a Supported Browser: For optimal performance, use the latest version of your browser.
Ensure a Quiet Environment: Find a distraction-free environment to focus on your test.
Follow the Timer: All tests are timed, so ensure you manage your time effectively to complete all questions. Once you start a test, the timer continues to count down even if you exit the tab, so make sure you are ready to take the test when you press start.
Test Your Equipment: If your test involves video recording, make sure your webcam and microphone are working properly before starting.
Skills Tests
Skills Tests are designed to evaluate your knowledge and abilities in a specific subject. These are typically multiple-choice or short-answer questions that assess how well you understand the required skills for the job.
Taking the Test
On the test landing page, you should choose an authentication method (using social logins is safe, nothing will be posted in your feeds). You can also change the UI language from the top right corner. Please note this would not change the language the questions are in.
After logging in you will be presented with an overview of how much time you'll have to answer the questions.
If you don't proceed from this page for any reason, you can always come back and start the test once you're ready.
Once you start the test you will be presented with the first question. In case you want to see all of the questions first, you can navigate between the questions from the left side by clicking on the numbers.
You will see the timer on the right top corner while taking the test. Make sure to keep your eye on how much time you have left.
Note that you can change the answer to any question at any time before submitting your test.
Test results page and feedback
After submitting your test you will be taken to the test results page, where you might be able to see your score for the close-ended questions and a message from the employer.
This is also where you should fill out your personal details and submit them.
Note that once your open-ended question(s) are evaluated your score can either increase or decrease, depending on how it was scored by the employer.
Video Tests (Asynchronous Interviews)
Video Tests allow you to record responses to pre-set questions from the employer. This enables the company to assess your communication skills, skills needed for the job, and thought process.
Taking the Test
On the test landing page, you should choose an authentication method (using social logins is safe, nothing will be posted in your feeds). You can also change the UI language from the top right corner. Please note this would not change the language the questions are in.
After logging in, you will be presented with a screen where you can test your video settings before starting the actual test. This is a crucial step to ensure everything is working properly and avoid technical issues during your recording.
On this screen, you can:
Check your camera and microphone: Make sure your video and audio are clear and functioning properly. If you encounter issues, try refreshing the page or adjusting your device settings.
Do a practice recording: This allows you to get comfortable with the system before starting the real test. You can record yourself, review the video, and do as many retakes as needed.
Ensure a stable internet connection: A strong and stable connection is essential to avoid disruptions while recording your responses.
Tips:
Disable ad blockers and privacy extensions: Some browser extensions may interfere with video recording, so we recommend disabling them before starting.
Use an updated Chrome browser: For the best experience, we recommend taking the test on the latest version of Google Chrome.
Once you have tested your setup and feel ready, click “Continue to the test” to proceed. You will then be presented with an overview of how much time you'll have to answer the questions.
If you don't proceed from this page for any reason, you can always come back and start the test once you're ready.
Recording the Test
Click “Start the Test” to begin. You will be taken to the first question, where you can record your response. When you're ready, press “Record” and answer the question clearly and confidently. Each question has a 2-minute timer, which you will see on the video recording area. In addition, there is an overall test timer that tracks the total time left for completing all questions. This is displayed at the top of the test screen. If you run out of time on a question, the system will keep what you have recorded until that point.
You can navigate between different questions before submitting the test. If you’re not satisfied with an answer, you can re-record your response, but be mindful of the overall test timer.
Once you have answered all the questions, click “Finish Test.” A confirmation screen will appear asking if you’re sure you want to submit your answers.
After confirming, your responses will be uploaded, and you’ll need to click “Submit Videos” to finalize your submission. Once completed, you will see a confirmation screen indicating that your test has been successfully submitted.
Refer to the FAQ's at the bottom of this page to understand what to do if your videos have failed to upload.
Homework Assignments
Homework Assignments are take-home tasks designed to evaluate your problem-solving skills and ability to complete job-related tasks. These tests are usually open-ended and require critical thinking.
Taking the test
On the test landing page, you should choose an authentication method (using social logins is safe, nothing will be posted in your feeds). You can also change the UI language from the top right corner. Please note this would not change the language the questions are in.

You will see the timer on the right top corner while taking the test. Make sure to keep your eye on how much time you have left.
Since these assignments are open-ended, you may be required to type written responses, upload files, or submit links, depending on the employer’s requirements.
After completing your responses, review your work carefully before submitting. Once you're ready, click “Submit Test.”
After submission, you will be taken to the test results page. At this stage, your assignment will be sent to the employer for review. Since homework assignments require manual evaluation, your results may not be available immediately.
The employer will assess your responses and may reach out with further steps. Be sure to check your email for any follow-up communication from the employer regarding next steps.
By following these guidelines, you can confidently complete any test on Toggl Hire. If you encounter technical issues or have questions about your test, contact the company's hiring team (the contact for the hiring manager can be found at the bottom of test landing page), or contact us at support@hire.toggl.com.
Good luck with your test!
